Childen's Ceramics

$175/7 week session

In this 90 minute class, students will explore hand building techniques using natural Earth clay. (Please note, students WILL NOT use the pottery wheels in this course as this is a prerequisite course for working with clay) Students will have a different guided featured project from week to week, which will offer room for many options and creativity within the project. The last classes of the session will be reserved for glazing and painting and you will receive a call later on when your student's box of projects from the full course is ready for pick up. (Students will not bring home projects from week to week but will pick up their full box of finished projects later on.) The structure of this course  encourages perseverance, project planning and creativity. All of the foundational techniques in hand building will be covered, including slab rolling, coil rolling, score/slipping, trimming, pinching, wedging, glazing, painting and much more. Students will learn about the kiln firing process and gain appreciation for the art of working with clay.  Students will be taught how to clean their stations and tools thoroughly and care for their supplies.

Children's Mixed Media

$175/7 week session

In each 90 minute class, students will create a fully guided project along with the teacher, finishing one project per class. Projects will each encompass the use of multiple mediums, and students will be given space for experimentation and creativity as they explore using and mixing different mediums. Materials will be different every week and will include found objects (cardboard, buttons, bottle caps, etc), tempera paint, watercolor, tempera paint sticks, oil pastels, chalk pastels, markers, colored pencils, and much more. Students will be supported in strengthening skills in drawing, cutting on a line, mixing colors, assembling, collage, painting, blending and more. Projects will differ from week to week and will not be repeated within sessions. Famous artists, art movements and art history will be incorporated into  projects. This class is perfect for allowing your young student to develop their artistic voice, and will likewise increase their confidence in  and appreciation of art.

Foundational Drawing and Painting

$195/ 7 week session

This weekly 90 minute class is for students who are moving on to a more independent level in their art. The teacher will work with students towards reaching their own individual artistic goals, comparing students only to themselves and their progress over time. Projects will include working with still life, breaking down a photograph, portrait work, developing illustration skills and more. All supplies are included and will vary within projects. Supplies may include pastel, marker, colored pencil,  charcoal pencils, tempera paints, watercolor paints and acrylic paints. Class sizes are kept small so that the teacher can give lots of personal attention to each student. Please bring any samples you may have of past student work on the first day so class so that the instructor may gauge the student's learning level, and discuss possible projects and goals with the student.

Pottery Basics

$195/7 week session

We recommend that students begin by taking a 7 week Children's Ceramics course as a prerequisite to this course. in this weekly 90 minute class, students will learn the basics of "throwing" on a high powered pottery wheel. Students will toggle between hand building and wheel stations, learning all of the skills necessary for creating pottery. Trimming and glazing techniques will be focused on, as well as an appreciation for the process of kiln firing. Students will be supported to work on more independent projects over time, as the teacher will introduce project planning techniques to help students find their creative voice.  Class is limited to eight students to ensure that students receive lots of personal attention.

Due to our kiln firing schedule, projects may not be ready to take home on the last day of class. If this happens, you will receive a call from us when projects are ready for pick up.

The Art of Storytelling with Illustrator Mark Levine

$220/ 7 week session

In this weekly two hour class, students will work towards drawing and illustration goals, working to create their own story line with characters that they have created. The Art-of-Storytelling will give each student the opportunity to explore their own concepts, stories, characters, in a sequential layout used in comic book and graphic novels. The course however is not limited to storyboarding for comic books. The teacher will present his techniques and methodology to the class as a whole  as they can be applied to produce comic strips, cell animation, storyboards for a video game, or online graphics.
It is important to note that each student will be given one on one direction and support by me in each class. The teacher will encourage each student to work on their own level as far as talent, abilities, interest, and subject matter. The teacher will direct each student to work on individual goals, stay on task and learn a new skill set. Some students will complete a three page story while others
might complete a couple of stories that are 3-5 pages. The teacher does not give students homework due to the heavy load of homework already given by their teachers-but optional assignments based on developing their unique skill set, using whatever artistic media they may have at home.
Besides tapping into each student's drawing and painting abilities as it applies to illustrating, the instructor will teach layout and design, printing techniques, calligraphy, masthead-title page design and art direction.
Lastly, the instructor will encourage a “team” atmosphere that reflects on art studio bullpens that produce artwork for the comic book industry. We will accomplish this by sharing ideas, sketching together, and discussing a broad range of subjects.

COVID 19 Response

To keep our students and families safe, we have implemented the following new procedures in our Secondary  level classes:

Limited attendance. All classes are limited to half occupancy with students sitting at their own individual tables 6' apart from each other.

New entry procedures:

Students will line up outside at the start of class and will be let in one  at a time The student's temperature will be taken before being permitted to enter (must be under 100). Students will wear masks outside while lined up and through our lobby as they are escorted in. Students must use hand sanitizer or wash up before entering the classroom. Clean aprons will be provided for each student. Once seated, students will have the option of removing their masks.  The teacher will wear a mask if they need to get within 6' of any student. Students will wash up again when exiting our facility.

Please note, parent's must drop off at door. Door will be locked between students during check in time. All registration must be done online prior to the start of class. Please keep all communication at the door limited to help keep our check in process speedy and smooth. If you need to communicate with us, please do so by emailing Michelle at sstylianou50@yahoo.com or calling us at 631-744-4001 and leaving a message.

Exit procedures:

Class times are now staggered so that fewer people will be entering/exiting at one time. At exit time, only one child/parent group will leave the space at a time. You will need to sanitize again on your way out.

No wandering through the studio.Students must remain at their table throughout the duration of the 90 minute class. If they need to use the bathroom during class, they will be escorted into the office  by our secretary, who will sanitize the bathroom immediately after.

Supplies: Many students have expressed that they are happy to bring their own. While that is a great idea, we use many different and varying supplies each week in our elementary arts classes, as a major goal is introducing students to a wide variety of materials. With that in mind, having students bring their own supplies would force families to have to purchase a huge and expensive list of supplies. To keep things simple, we will continue to provide all supplies for classes. We have implemented a "caddy system." Each table will have a personal caddy filled with the week's supplies. This caddy and it's contents will be sanitized thoroughly before and after each class.

Cleaning Logs:

We are now required by New York State to keep daily cleaning logs. During your classes, you will see supplies and areas continually being cleaned down to ensure the most sanitary environment possible for our students.

Feeling sick? Please stay home for the week and take advantage of our very flexible make up policy. If we suspect that you or your your student may be experiencing any signs of sickness, we will kindly ask you to leave our space (even if your temperature reads as normal.) Please understand that we must be vigilant in these unusual circumstances.

Ring System/ Locked Doors

During our class times, our doors will remain locked. Outside people will not be permitted to enter our space for any reason. All registration will occur online to reduce the number of people in our office at a time. We will be offering virtual tours only and all communication will be done virtually or over the phone.
