Adult pottery classes are perfect for both very beginner through experienced students. These classes are "open level" which means that students learn at their own pace within a group of students who have varying levels of experience. Class sizes are kept small and manageable for the teacher, so hat she can support each students personal needs and goals.
Tuition is $250/ 7 week session
Tuition includes all clay, firings, glazes and use of community supplies. There are no extra charges. If you need an extra class to finish up your work from the session, this can be arranged for the cost of $40 per additional class. Please email us to schedule additional classes at sstylianou50@yahoo.com
Class Structure:
Classes are currently limited to eight students. Each student will have an assigned wheel and hand building table which will be exclusively theirs for the duration of the seven week session. On the first day of class, the instructor will acquaint all students with the basics of "throwing" pottery on a high powered wheel. She will assess each students individual learning level and formulate a plan to support each student's individual needs. Throughout the course, students can expect to strengthen skills in "throwing", trimming, hand building, glazing and more. Students will gain an appreciation of the firing process and learn to care for their tools and clean their stations thoroughly when class is through. Techniques in hand building will be covered as well, as most students will toggle between their wheel and hand building station. Handbuilding is often incorporated into thrown pottery projects, for example, a braided handle on a vase would be "handbillt." Some students may prefer to work exclusively on handbuilding, as the course goes on. Students will learn to plan out projects and will receive guidance with every step of the way.
Experienced students may choose to spend the the studio time however they please. The teacher will support students with experience by offering more challenging options and techniques for projects.
The teacher will provide throwing and trimming demonstrations in every class, to help students learn. Special techniques such as under glazing and sgraffitto will be covered, helping students to optimize their artistic and creative potential.
Production:
We are not set up as a production space and cannot support this in our space. If you are an experienced student and would like more studio time, we recommend registering for more than one class per week.
Materials
All materials are provided to the student and are included in the cost of tuition. All clay, glazes tools, forings etc are included in tuition. Students may not bring extra clay home. We also cannot fire extra work that the student has made with clay that they bought on their own and worked on at home. We are a busy pottery studio and fire our kiln around the clock, and we cannot handle the extra volume of kiln firing that this would bring.
Picking up finished work
When your work from the course is complete, it will be boxed up and ready for you to pick up. You will receive a call from us when your box is ready and may schedule a convenient pick up time. Because of the volume of students and student work that must be fired every week, things can sometimes take longer than planned to bring home. This is not the fault of any of our dedicated instructors; it is just the nature of a busy pottery studio.
These classes are self direction approved. If you are paying through self direction funding, please use the registration buttons to register and pay. Next, Email Michelle at sstylianou50@yahoo.com with requests for receipts and/or invoices so that you may be reimbursed. Please allow a few days for us to send you your requested invoices/receipts.
Studio rules:
Please do your best to arrive on time. The doors will be locked five minutes into the start of class. If you arrive late, please ring the doorbell for assistance.
The teacher will leave about fifteen minutes at the end of class for cleanup. She will give time checks as it gets closer to clean up time, so that students may plan the next steps for in progress projects. When it is clean up time, please begin cleaning right away to ensure that your station is cleaned on time. The instructor will double check that all stations are cleaned thoroughly, as this is the student's responsibility. Students must leave class on time. Due to our new exiting procedures, students must be prepared to leave right on time.
As we are practicing social distancing, please remain at your own table/wheel. You may talk to neighbors but from your own seat as much as possible.
Students must wear a mask on their way in and out of class, and will have the choice of whether or not to wear it during class.
Make Up Procedures:
If you cannot make it to class, please give us as much notice as possible. You can email Michelle at sstylianou50@yahoo.com to inform us of an absence or call and leave us a message at 631-744-4001. It is important that you call us to report your absence, as we will then try to fill your seat with another student who is making up from another class. We do expect all of our pottery classes to fill, so this is an extra important measure to take to help us provide a makeup class to another student. Make up classes will not be carried over into future sessions. For example, if you registered for Fall Session 1 and did not complete your makeup class within that seven week time span, we will not carry it over to fall session 2 as there won't be extra room to accommodate make up students. NO REFUNDS OR CREDITS WILL BE GIVEN AFTER THE SESSION BEGINS. Of course, in the event of extenuating circumstances, we will make exceptions, but please notify us ASAP.

We are now required by New York State to keep daily cleaning logs. During your classes, you will see supplies and areas continually being cleaned down to ensure the most sanitary environment possible for our students.
Feeling sick? Please stay home for the week and take advantage of our very flexible make up policy. If we suspect that you or your your student may be experiencing any signs of sickness, we will kindly ask you to leave our space (even if your temperature reads as normal.) Please understand that we must be vigilant in these unusual circumstances.
Ring System/ Locked Doors
During our class times, our doors will remain locked. Outside people will not be permitted to enter our space for any reason.
