Adult pottery classes are "open level" which means that students learn at their own pace within a group of students who have varying levels of experience. Class sizes are kept small so that the teacher can support each students personal needs and goals. Students may not bring extra clay home. We also cannot fire extra work that the student has made with clay that they bought on their own and worked on at home. We are a busy pottery studio and fire our kiln around the clock, and we cannot handle the extra volume of kiln firing that this would bring.
Tuition is $270/ 7 week session ($45 drop in)
Tuition includes all clay, firings, glazes and use of community supplies. There are no extra charges. If you need an extra class to finish up your work from the session, there are "open studio" times for existing students. Times can be found on the special events page.
Class Structure:
Classes are currently limited to eight to ten students. On the first day of class, the instructor will acquaint all students with the basics of "throwing" pottery on a high powered wheel. They will assess each students individual learning level and formulate a plan to support each student's individual needs. Throughout the course, students can expect to strengthen skills in "throwing", trimming, hand building, glazing and more. Students will gain an appreciation of the firing process and learn to care for their tools and clean their stations thoroughly when class is through. Techniques in hand building will be covered as well, as most students will toggle between their wheel and hand building station. Hand building is often incorporated into thrown pottery projects, for example, a braided handle on a vase would be "hand built." Some students may prefer to work exclusively on hand building, as the course goes on.
Experienced students may choose to spend the the studio time however they please. The teacher will provide throwing and trimming demonstrations in every class, to help students learn. Special techniques such as under glazing and graffitto will be covered, helping students to optimize their artistic and creative potential.
Picking up finished work
Due to the volume of students and student work that must be fired every week, some projects may not be finished by the last day of classes. If that applies to you, pieces are typically ready within 1 week of the last day of classes.
